What is Cambridge Maths Hub?

admin89177

Cambridge Maths Hub is one of the 40 Maths Hubs in England, established as part of the national Maths Hub programme funded by England’s Department for Education (DfE). These hubs are designed to improve maths education and support teachers in their professional development.

The Cambridge Maths Hub focuses on supporting schools and teachers in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, West Suffolk and West Norfolk. Its main activities include:

1. Professional Development for Teachers

●     High-quality collaborative, training programmes for maths teachers at all stages, from early years to post-16.

●     Guidance on teaching strategies, curriculum planning, and implementing effective mathematical practices.

●     Providing a career pathway for teachers who want to focus on maths.

Through working with the maths hub, my maths lead is developing high quality teaching pedagogy (which is transferable across much of the curriculum), gaining a remarkable depth of subject knowledge and improving her leadership skills particularly around delivering PD to other teachers and embedding good practice across the school.

Beci McCaughran, Headteacher Fulbourn Primary School, Dec 2024

2. Promoting high quality teaching

●     Supporting schools to adopt the Teaching for Mastery approach, which focuses on deep conceptual understanding and problem-solving in mathematics.

●     Participating in research projects to test and develop new ideas in mathematics teaching and sharing evidence-based practices with schools to improve classroom teaching.

“It is really noticeable where schools have participated in the mastering number approach through the confidence in the teachers’ delivery, the confidence in the children’s use of manipulatives and the correct use of mathematical vocabulary of staff and pupils. I can spot the difference in schools which have participated compared to those that haven’t.”                    Lisa Corby, Academy Improvement Lead, Nov 2024

3. Collaboration

●     Facilitating collaboration among teachers and school leaders to share good practices, resources, and innovative teaching methods.

●     Supporting the development of mathematics skills across all phases, from early years to post-16 education.

“Thank you - a fab day and my brain has been stretched in the best way. I love working with such a diverse, interesting, collaborative and enthusiastic team.” LLME Sep 2024
